Acer Buergerianum
The Trident Maple is one of the most beloved bonsai species, admired for its elegant three-pointed leaves, smooth bark, and breathtaking fall color. Whether grown as a young tree or shaped into a miniature landscape, it brings balance, calm, and quiet beauty to any space.
Light & Temperature:
Trident Maples love bright light and full sun, especially in the morning and late afternoon. If grown as a bonsai, partial shade during the hottest midday hours helps prevent leaf burn. They are cold hardy but appreciate wind protection in winter.
Watering:
The key to a healthy Trident Maple is consistent moisture. Keep the soil lightly moist — not soaked — at all times. Water thoroughly when the top half-inch feels dry. Bonsai trees dry out faster than potted plants, so daily checks during summer are important.
Feeding:
Fertilize every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced organic fertilizer. Reduce feeding in midsummer heat and stop once the tree enters dormancy in fall.
Repotting Tips:
Repot young trees every 1–2 years in early spring, just before buds open. Use a fast-draining bonsai soil blend such as akadama, pumice, and pine bark. Trim long roots lightly and avoid overpruning at one time.
Shaping & Training:
Trident Maples respond beautifully to wiring and pruning. Structural pruning is best done in early spring, while fine shaping can be done throughout the growing season.
Fun Fact:
In bonsai form, Trident Maple leaves can reduce to one-third their natural size, giving the tree an incredibly delicate, miniature look.
